it difficult to eat. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
Karen has Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC), a cancer that
originated in a salivary gland. According to <a href="http://www.accrf.org/index.php">Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma</a> (ACC), has no known causes or links to smoking and alcohol consumption. The disease is
slightly more prevalent in women than men. Standard treatment for ACC involves
surgery followed by radiation. Currently, there are no drug therapies that have
been proven to be effective in a large portion of ACC patients. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
When we asked Karen if she met
other ACC patients while at M.D. Anderson she replied:<i><o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
<i>We did not. ACC is a very rare cancer. When we researched online we
learned that most oncologists will never encounter an ACC patient in their
entire careers. Most of the rest will encounter it only once and almost never
will you find an oncologist who has encountered it twice.</i></div>
<a name='more'></a><i> <o:p></o:p></i><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: .25in;">
<i>When we arrived at M.D. Anderson, we learned there is only one radiologist who
does proton radiation (the one reason we chose to travel to MDA in Houston,
Texas). On our first meeting, we asked the oncologist if he had ever encountered
ACC. He said that not only had he encountered it, but he was getting ready to
publish a paper on his treatment for ACC. <o:p></o:p></i></div>

<b><i>Answer:</i></b><i> We did some
research early, but relied on the ENT oncologist in the beginning. He wanted to
go back and take a larger area than the original doctor since it was now
diagnosed as ACC. After the surgery, he set me up for six weeks of radiation.

<i>EMAIL FROM BRAD:</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
<i>The
name of Karen's cancer is "Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma." It is
officially incurable but slow growing. It usually starts in a salivary
gland somewhere in the head or neck (you have them all over your head). <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>Doctors
do not know what causes ACC. It isn’t hereditary or environmental (Karen has
never smoked or drank--not even tried it). <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>This
head/neck cancer is the area that can be radiated. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>ACC
does not respond to chemo. The only reason Karen had chemo was the chemo was an
activator/sensitizer for the radiation. Most oncologists (according to
the ACC webpage) will either never encounter ACC or one or two times max in a
career. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>It
is pretty well standard to treat ACC with radiation alone.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>We
came to MD Anderson because they had proton radiation. <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>Radiation
to the face and neck is exceptionally painful and damaging long term because of
the mouth, teeth and throat. Traditional radiation to one side of the face will
damage the other side of the face almost equally as it exits (back of head as
well). <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>Proton
radiation pretty well only damages the area it is aimed at. The proton
radiation is a real blessing in head/neck situations. There is only one
radiologist at M.D. Anderson who does the proton because they only have one
machine (the machines are incredibly expensive which is why they are only at 9
hospitals in the US). <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i>When
we met the oncologist the first time, I asked him if he had ever encountered
ACC. He said "not only have I encountered it, but I am getting ready
to publish a paper on my treatment of ACC." <o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<i> That
was God...no doubt about it. He is the one who has come up with the chemo
as an activator to the radiation which has had very good results on the initial
tumor.<o:p></o:p></i></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
Blessings in the midst of a cancer
journey? Yes, there are many blessings, not because of the cancer, but in spite
of cancer. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
Cancer is not a respecter of
persons—not age, goodness, or what the patient’s schedule demands. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC)
invaded Karen White’s mouth. Because she is wife of Brad White and his office
manager and because she is mother to Niki and Amber, ACC touched their lives
also.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
Cancer never affects just the patient.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
It appears so, but the caregiver,
the children and every doctor, technician and even the cleaning staff touch the
life of a cancer patient. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0in;">
How did Karen find a blessing in the
midst of pain and financial strain? God opened many doors for her to share with
other cancer patients. She did not live in fear of ACC, but in the hope and
blessings God bestowed on her and her family. </div>
